Takimi-no-yu looks straight onto a waterfall and the stream, and the rock-built open-air bath sits in a valley floor with nothing man-made around it. Lit by oil lamps and reached from December to March only on the inn's own reserved shuttle, so it is deliberately hard to get to and there is nothing else within reach once you are there.

The baths

The rock-built open-air bath is mixed. The Japanese site says only that women-only hours exist; the inn's own English page gives them as 11:00-12:00 and 17:00-18:00.

Indoor bath

Kenroku-no-yu is open 24 hours and the women's side has its own open-air tub, so women can avoid the mixed bath entirely.

Takimi-no-yu (5:30-21:30) looks onto the waterfall and stream and has an open-air section; the main building's indoor bath keeps the same hours.

Getting there
A lamp-lit inn at the bottom of the Aoni valley in Kuroishi, Aomori. From 1 December to 31 March private cars are banned on the access road: you must transfer to the inn's own shuttle (Kuroishi Station - Michi-no-Eki Niji-no-ko - Aoni Onsen) and reservations by phone are compulsory, as the shuttle does not run without them. There is no local bus service in winter.
