The only hotel in Dogashima with its own source - a drinkable, high-alkaline water it calls 'kesho no yu', the make-up water - and an open-air bath set at the waterline facing the West Izu sunset. Day visitors are welcome from 13:00, and tattooed visitors are told exactly how to be admitted.

The baths

Open-air bath

'Nagisa no Rotenburo', an open-air bath right at the water's edge - salt air, the sound of the waves, and a sunset over the sea that the hotel likens to a painting. The hotel's own source is odourless and tasteless, unusual for a coastal spring.

Indoor bath

'Aurora no Yu', a stone-built indoor bathhouse lit through stained glass, with 100% free-flowing spring water, a cold bath, a lying bath and a sauna.

Private (kashikiri) bath

Two private rock baths, 'Sehama no Yu' and 'Isobue no Yu', 3,300 yen for 45 minutes, booked at the front desk on the day, 16:00-21:00. The hotel does not state whether day visitors may book them - assume overnight guests first and ask on arrival.

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.

At Nishina in Nishi-Izu town, on the Dogashima shore about 5 minutes' walk from Sawada Park. West Izu has no railway; come by car or by bus from Shuzenji Station.
