The only public bath left in Shuzenji, rebuilt to revive the town's sotoyu tradition; indoor only and deliberately simple, refreshed with a stone tub in the latest refurbishment. The setting - a temple town along the Katsura river - carries it rather than the bath itself.

Scored from official photos, maps and transport information — not from a visit.

The baths

Indoor bath

Indoor bath only, in a rebuilt sotoyu (public bath) with a stone tub and cypress, cedar and pine interior; a skylight drops daylight into the room. Reopened on 7 November after major refurbishment. The adjoining 12 m Gyokuro tower is a viewing platform over the hot-spring village.
