Jigokudani Onsen Korakukan
地獄谷温泉 後楽館
Can you bathe here with a tattoo?
This is the question we built the site around, so we answer it per situation.
Visiting for the day
The tattoo policy is not stated publicly. Please contact the facility.
Staying overnight
The tattoo policy is not stated publicly. A private or in-room bath is available, which is often an option for tattooed guests.
How it scores
Every onsen on this site is scored on the same five things.
The baths
Indoor bath
Wooden indoor bath 'Enmei-no-Yu', separate for men and women.
Open-air bath
MIXED-GENDER open-air bath on the riverbank, facing the Jigokudani geyser. This is the bath in the famous photographs, and it is konyoku - men and women share it. The inn does not state any swimsuit or towel rule, so ask at reception if that matters to you. Wild macaques come down to the bath area, and occasionally into it; this inn predates the monkey park by a century.
Open-air bath
A separate women-only open-air bath, for anyone not comfortable with the mixed one.
Private (kashikiri) bath
One family bath (kazoku-buro). Whether day visitors may use it is not stated.
A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
Practical details
- Day visits
- Yes — you can bathe without staying overnight.
- Day visit price
- ¥1,500Adult 1,500 yen, child 750 yen. The inn states the price but not the day-use hours on its own site, so confirm by phone before walking in. There is a rest area serving soba and drinks.
- Staying overnight
- Yes
- Getting there
- You cannot drive to the door. The inn is reached on foot along about 1.8 km of mountain path; from 1 April to 30 November a different route lets you park about 400 m short of the building. From Kanbayashi Onsen the walk is roughly 30 minutes. It stands directly opposite the entrance to the Jigokudani Monkey Park, so it is the closest bed to the snow monkeys. Proper shoes matter in winter.
