Bokido is the reason people come: a natural sea cave roughly 25 m wide and 50 m deep, cut out of the mudstone by the Kumano Sea, with the hot spring pooled inside and the open Pacific through the cave mouth - spray blows in on rough days. The hotel itself is an enormous, dated complex reached only by its own 5-minute ferry, and the individual baths close in rotation for cleaning, so check the timetable before paying the day-use fare.

Open-air bath

BOKIDO - the reason people come. A natural sea cave in the headland, roughly 25 m wide, 50 m deep and 15 m high, carved out of mudstone by the waves of the Kumano Sea, with the hot spring pooled inside it. You bathe under the cave roof looking out through the mouth of the cave at the open Pacific, close enough that spray blows in on rough days. The name means 'the cave that makes you forget to go home', given by the Kishu lord Tokugawa Yorinori. Men's and women's use alternates: 5:00-10:00 / 13:00-23:00.

GENBUDO - a second natural cave bath, in the Nissho-kan wing, rougher and less finished than Bokido; the hotel calls it a cave bath where you experience nature as it is. 5:00-12:00 / 16:00-23:00.

Taki-no-Yu, where the water runs down a natural rock face beside the tub, plus Hamayu-no-Yu and Iso-no-Yu.

Reception 9:00-18:00, bathing until 19:00. Individual baths close for cleaning: Bokido 10:00-13:00, Hamayu/Taki-no-Yu 12:00-15:00, Genbudo 12:00-16:00, Iso-no-Yu 9:00-12:00.

The hotel stands on the Katsuura headland and is reached only by its own boat: walk about 6 minutes from JR Kii-Katsuura Station to the Kanko Sanbashi pier, then about 5 minutes on the Urashima-maru ferry. Day visitors may use the hotel's free car park.
