The open-air baths sit on a terrace above the Yufuin basin with Mt Yufu filling the view, the women's Kukai-no-yu running to more than 150 tatami mats. The water itself is an ordinary Yufuin spring - you come for what you are looking at while in it - and day bathing closes at 14:30.

Scored from official photos, maps and transport information — not from a visit.

The baths

Open-air bath

Very large open-air baths facing Mt Yufu - Gomuso-no-yu and Kobo-no-yu for men, Kukai-no-yu for women.

Open to day visitors

Private (kashikiri) bath

Family baths included in the day-use fee: the open-air Momiji-no-yu and the indoor Tsugumi-no-yu and Mejiro-no-yu. Not reservable - you walk up and use one if the door is free. Families and groups only. The indoor family baths are unavailable on Mondays and the open-air family bath on Tuesdays.

Open to day visitors

In-room bath

Some guest rooms have their own baths.

Overnight guests only

A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
