The tall wooden bathhouse at the crossroads of Nozawa village is the symbol of the place, free to enter with a donation box by the door and nothing else inside - no lockers, no showers, nowhere to sit afterwards. The sulphur water leaves the source at around 66C, so even the cooler tub is hot, and the point of it is that you walk out and straight on to the next of the thirteen sotoyu.

Indoor bath only, divided into an atsu-yu (hot) and a nuru-yu (cooler) tub. Simple sulphur water, source temperature about 66C, so the hot tub is genuinely hot by Japanese standards. The tall wooden bathhouse in the middle of the village is the symbol of Nozawa Onsen.

Free. There is no ticket desk and nobody on duty: you walk in, undress and bathe. A donation box (saisen-bako) stands inside, and the village asks bathers to leave a small offering toward the electricity, water and daily cleaning paid for by the 'yunakama' neighbourhood associations that own and run the baths. A few hundred yen in coins is the customary gesture; carry change, because nothing here takes cards.

Getting there
In the middle of Nozawa Onsen village, at the crossing of the two main lanes; every other sotoyu is within a 10-minute walk. Reach the village by bus from JR Iiyama Station (Hokuriku Shinkansen), roughly 25 minutes. No car is needed once you are in the village, and there is no parking at the bathhouse itself.
