Hirayu no Mori
ひらゆの森 · Okuhida Onsen
Can you bathe here with a tattoo?
This is the question we built the site around, so we answer it per situation.
Visiting for the day
The tattoo policy is not stated publicly. A private (kashikiri) bath is available, which is often an option for tattooed guests.
Staying overnight
The tattoo policy is not stated publicly. A private or in-room bath is available, which is often an option for tattooed guests.
How it scores
Every onsen on this site is scored on the same five things.
The baths
Open-air bath
Sixteen open-air baths in a wooded garden, seven on the men's side and nine on the women's, at different temperatures and from different sources.
Indoor bath
A large indoor bath holding around 30 people, with a retro feel. There is also an indoor bath reserved for overnight guests.
Private (kashikiri) bath
Two 'iron-pot' private open-air baths. Day visitors can book them 12:00-15:00 (last reception 14:15) for 3,000 yen per room; free for overnight guests. This is the practical option here for anyone who does not want to use the shared baths.
A private bath means nobody else is in the water with you — often the practical answer if the shared baths are closed to tattooed guests.
