The reason people come to Ibusuki: open-air baths only, on a headland above the East China Sea with Mt Kaimon filling the western outlook, rebuilt and reopened at the end of 2025. The water is a strong salt spring running free-flowing from a 100C source; buses from Yamagawa Station are infrequent, so check the last departure before you get in.

The baths

Open-air bath

Open-air baths only - there is no indoor bath here and no private/kashikiri bath. The Japanese-style bath on the west side faces Mt. Kaimon; the Western-style bath on the east side looks toward Mt. Takeyama (nicknamed Snoopy Mountain) and the sea. They alternate by date: Japanese-style is women on odd days and men on even days, Western-style the reverse. Sodium chloride strong-salt spring, source temperature 100.4C, free-flowing. Since the 2025 rebuild a newly drilled source sometimes turns the water blue.

Adults (junior high school age and over) 900 yen, children (elementary and under) 450 yen, under-3s free. During designated 'special periods' (New Year, Golden Week, Obon, Silver Week) the adult rate rises to 1,500 yen incl. 100 yen bathing tax and children to 700 yen. A 2,000 yen combination ticket with the Yamagawa sand bath Sayuri includes a free medium drink at the bath's cafe, but is not sold during special periods. Towels are extra (300 yen souvenir towel, 300 yen bath-towel rental) and may be brought from home. Card and QR payment accepted. Open through New Year, Golden Week and Obon.

Getting there
Reachable without a car, but plan the return. It is 14 minutes by bus from JR Yamagawa Station (alight at the Tamatebako Onsen stop) or about 10 minutes by car, with 70 free parking spaces. Yamagawa is a short train ride south of Ibusuki Station on the Ibusuki Makurazaki line, but both trains and buses on this stretch of the Satsuma peninsula are sparse, so check the last departure before you soak.
