The one communal bathhouse in Tsukioka, whose water is a striking emerald green and strongly sulphurous - the reason the resort markets itself on skin. The operator says the water is changed every day. Indoor bathing; this is the budget way into a resort that is otherwise all ryokan.

- At 403-8 Tsukioka Onsen, Shibata City, in the middle of the Tsukioka resort in northern Niigata; about 15 minutes by car from the Toyosaka-Niigata-Higashiko interchange. Realistically a car or a hotel shuttle is needed - it is well away from the Shinkansen corridor.
