The baths
Indoor bath
Simple spring at around 40C - lukewarm by Beppu standards, so easy to sit in for a long time. No water added; free-flowing from the source and rich in metasilicic acid. The building was destroyed in the 2016 Kumamoto-Oita earthquake and rebuilt with crowdfunding and donations, so the tiling is new. Step-free with a ramp. There is also a free foot bath outside.

- ¥300300 yen is the visitor rate. Members pay 200 yen, and membership is granted to anyone who donates 2,000 yen or more toward the bath - a leftover of the crowdfunding that rebuilt it. Elementary-school age and under are free. A one-month pass is 2,800 yen plus a 300 yen first-time registration fee. Closed the 4th Friday. Enquiries: Umezono Onsen Kumiai, 0977-23-4748.

- At 5-23 Motomachi on Umezono-dori, a century-old street of bars and restaurants a short walk from JR Beppu Station. No parking. One of the few step-free neighbourhood baths in the centre.
