The baths
Indoor bath
A reconstruction of the Meiji-era village bathhouse, down to the Kutani-ware tiles on the floor and walls and the stained glass. Important: there are no taps and no showers, and soap and shampoo may not be used. You soak and leave - the Meiji practice of 'yuami' - so wash at the ordinary Soyu across the square either before or after. Foreign visitors who arrive expecting a normal bathhouse routine are the ones who get it wrong here.

- ¥700Adults 700 yen, children 6-11 280 yen, children 3-5 140 yen, under 3 free. A combined ticket with the ordinary Soyu next door costs 1,000 yen, which is the sensible way to do both. On the 4th Wednesday of each month it opens at noon.

- Stands in the middle of the yu-no-kuruwa square at the centre of Yamashiro Onsen, a few steps from the ordinary Soyu. Nearest station JR Kagaonsen on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, then bus or taxi.
