The oldest bathhouse in Echigo-Yuzawa and the literary one: it stands close to the inn where Kawabata Yasunari wrote 'Snow Country', and he is said to have bathed here himself. Genuinely small - five or six people fill the tub - so it can feel crowded on a ski weekend. Indoor bathing only.

- At 930 Yuzawa, about 20 minutes on foot uphill from JR Echigo-Yuzawa Station, or roughly 10 minutes by car from the Yuzawa interchange. Echigo-Yuzawa is about 70 to 80 minutes from Tokyo by Joetsu Shinkansen, so this is reachable as a day trip from the capital; the walk is steady uphill, which matters in snow.
